*Orangeburg is a type of pipe made by the Fiber Conduit Company in Orangeburg NY (later renamed Orangeburg Manufacturing Company).  This piping was used in residential and commercial buildings.  The piping was made from wood fiber and wood pulp, then covered with tar like products.  It was manufactured and used from 1948 until the early 1970’s.  When originally used, the life expectancy was estimated to be 50 years, however, pipe failures started to happen in 10 years.  This type of piping is not acceptable in most residential building codes.  If Orangeburg piping is detected, it should either be replaced or regularly inspected for probable failure.
